Alec’s Birth Story

The arrival of a little one is always cause for great joy in a family. Love, laughter, tears and excitement… it’s one of those life changing events that we will always make reference to and remember. “On the day you were born…” How does your birth story start? Have your parents ever told you the story of what it was like on your birth date? Capturing photographs of this special day is one of my favorite aspects of my photography. Doing so for Gisselle and her family was just as much of a pleasure as it was a learning experience. This was my first time photographing a birth at Mercy Hospital. Whenever I am new to the hospital I like to make sure to ask a lot of questions to my pregnant mommas who will then ask them along to their doctors or medical professionals. Everything was perfectly planned for Alec’s birth just as Gisselle had wanted until an unexpected change. She would be having a scheduled c-section instead of her original natural birth plan. As we talked on the phone about this I told her that I would still try my best to document the day to the best of my ability and with what the hospital’s policy permitted.

Things change drastically whenever you are not having a natural birth, most hospitals here in Miami, FL have a one person rule for the operating room. So we knew our chances were slim. Still, together with Giselle & Danny’s family, I waited. Waited to meet baby Alec outside, just like everyone else. I was a bit heartbroken to be honest, I wanted to give Giselle the kind of pictures she had previously seen on my website of the parents enjoying their camera free time with the baby. But since it was out of all our control, I rolled with it and captured all the little details that made this birth special for everyone. I feel that the emotions in this session were so high because just like me, there was a room filled with loved ones anxiously awaiting the opportunity to see them since we weren’t allowed at all to see them once they arrived at the hospital. All that waiting made for so exciting grandparents photos… I have now new favorites for my birth gallery..  birth from the family’s perspective. Gisselle herself was delayed from being reunited with Alec so when the time came to be together… all that wait was surely worth it all. Introducing… Alec’s Birth Story.

What happens if I am not able to take the actual delivery photos? We improvise. Most of all of you moms either have a camera or a trusty iPhone that will get the job done in a quick and efficient manner so that Dad’s can get back to admiring baby. My goal as a birth photographer was not to be the greatest person in the room with a camera. Having photographed births for other photographers humbles me down to that level. I am not trying to get the artistic shot that no one out there has ever seen and therefore requires planning. I want to document the day as a person that wouldn’t otherwise be there enjoying the baby news right along with you. That way every single person involved can fully soak in the moment without being in charge of capturing the memories. Daniel and the team of nurses that assisted him did a wonderful job at filling in all those moments that I was not allowed to be part of. Which altogether gives you a sweet recollection of Alec’s Birth Story… all the bits and pieces were captured and no moment was overlooked. Giselle sent me the pictures she has and I’ve edited a few for her to cohesively fit with the look I give my images and here they are. I was definitely impressed! Thank you Gisselle for trusting me with the privilege of being your paparazzi birth photographer, as always it was an honor.
