Whenever an expecting mom sends me an inquiry something inside of me gets all excited. Even before we have spoken. Even before I know her story. The prospect of documenting a baby’s arrival always gets me super excited. There’s nothing quite like those first few days of having a newborn around. I miss it so incredibly much every day I watch my boys grow and grow. When Yesi wrote to me I remember calling her up and listening to how it is she found me, through mutual friends, and her sweet voice was insight enough to know she would be one of the most delightful moms to work with.
We met to go over all of the birth session details and it felt like I was catching up with an old girlfriend from high school. I remember already making her cry just telling her about how wonderful it was to be a mother. That although I was trying to explain with words, there was just nothing I could say that could really encompass the feeling. The way your baby changes every bit of you is something that could only be experienced. I remember being a single gal thinking how is that so? Aren’t you still you, but a mom? And the truth is that you as a mom and as a woman changes. Your mind forever changes. You are no longer just you in this world… there’s now a piece of you out there growing and breathing outside of you. Your worries take second place to those of your children’s and so it goes for about almost everything. Yesi knew that this would happen to her and she was ready. Ready to take it all in and meet her little boy. I can’t wait to continue to see their bond and relationship grow.
We shot her maternity session at the beautiful Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, ( you can see their photographs by clicking here ) and I had the pleasure of meeting the most important people in her life. All the grandmas and grampas were there excited about the arrival of their Derek. It always makes it so easy when I have already met the family to fit right along with them the day of the birth. So on a lovely Monday afternoon, while I was watching Finding Dory with the boys at the theatre, I got a call from Yesi that it was time. In typical birth photographer fashion, I gathered my troops and had my mother waiting for me at the house to take care of my babies as I rushed to meet Yesi at Hialeah Hospital. It was time to meet baby Derek.
