an apple a day

On a sunny Sunday morning I caught up with old time friends Casey and Adam and the growing family. Baby Mason is not a baby no more! It actually made me kinda sad to see him so grown up. It’s a constant reminder that my own babies will be big kids way too soon for my liking. I also got to meet for the first time the newest member to the family, Rhys! What a cutie, looks just like Mason did once upon a time. We explored the Children’s Garden in LSU Rural Life Museum downtown for their family session. Rhys was all about picking apples and eating them! Yes, that’s a green apple he’s carrying around. It’s so sweet to keep up with families over the years,

awaiting baby Derek

That first time we spoke over the phone about having her birth photographed I knew I was about to meet one of the sweetest mom-to-be. Through her voice I could tell all her excitement of the arrival of her first baby. Don’t you love it when someones emotion clearly translates through their voice? I met her a few weeks later and we planned the beginning of her birth package, her maternity session.

It was so fun and easy to hang out with these two during our shoot together in the beautiful botanical gardens. The day was absolutely perfect for a portrait session outside. It had been my first time visiting the Fairchild Tropical Botanical Gardens, ( weird I know,

A while ago I hosted an Instagram giveaway and offered two families a session with me of their liking. Melissa and Alex were one of the couples that won the prize and because they were pregnant we scheduled their maternity session early on this month. When planning our session, Melissa mentioned to me that she wanted that sunrise/sunset glow… and that taking pictures at the Bill Baggs Cape Florida Park would fit right into her vision of what she wanted for her maternity photos. A mom with a clear vision, I loved it.

Unfortunately, right when it was time to pack the car the day of the session, I noticed it was about to rain. There went that glow,

the one I’ll never forget

Following along Instagram’s hashtag for the day: #Flashbackfriday (if you even do such a thing), I’ve dug up in my archives one of my most favorite family sessions. You may recall this little beauty from the previous post. Ava was the baby I could NOT take my eyes off of. She demanded, without a single word, to be looked at. Jolie, (the mom) used to be an old co-worker of mine so photographing her family was an absolute treat. I documented their story way before Ava was born and up to this point in their lives. Then later on I moved away and haven’t seen them since! I loved everything about the feel of this session in particular and how we just took the time to hang out.

One of the greatest things for me as a photographer is to see the families I work with evolve throughout the years. The same way you feel when one of your friends gets engaged and then later married. Before you know it she’s already sharing the baby bump news… And it just keeps on going. Because I strive to make a connection with my clients, I see them the same way a friend would. A friend that follows along capturing their story as it evolves.

Laura and Alfred happen to be my friends, even before they were ever my clients, so working with them is all about capturing their personalities. It’s a less of a challenge when you already know how the session is going to go down.
